Assisted Living A New Lease on Life

Assisted living is a wonderful way for people recovering from surgery, seniors and people with disabilities to maintain some independence, while feeling safe and secure that there are personal care support services available at a moment’s notice.    Assisted living offers great relief and ease for quality of life that may not be otherwise obtainable. Senior care in assisted living may offer advantages when compared to independent living. The extent of amenities, care levels, and costs vary. There are several options, including a Private home with the aid of a part time/full-time companion, live in, adult daycare, post-surgical, hospital or rehab support, caregiver or nurse and/or Mobile Physician. Or, a Retirement Community, Board and Care Private Home, Assisted Living Community, Nursing Home Assistance, and Rehabilitation Facility.

Assisted living is designed to offer aid with daily living skill activities, such as cleaning, cooking, hygiene, dressing, bathing and more.  In certain states, assisted living communities are permitted to dispense medication and provide reminders so medication is not missed. This may be an important factor in the quality of life for a select individuals. For example, if an elderly diabetic misses medication regularly they may be at an increased risk for a TIA, also known as mini-stroke. If this continually occurs, cumulative brain damage and debilitation may be the result. In states that do not allow for medication assistance, there may be outside agencies that the assisted living facility is familiar with to offer the  appropriate personnel to come into the facility to dispense medication.

When consulting with a caregiver or an assisted living community representative, a free assessment is usually performed in order to identify  the type(s) of assistance that the individual will need.  In some cases, the doctor will provide this information based on an assessment, such as, the onset of a medical condition. Support persons may also be helpful in transferring care need information  and leveraging the opportunity for rehabilitative care when present at the time of the assessment.

Private home assistance, adult day care, board and care and assisted living communities offer a personal program to meet the needs of the individual. These types of assisted living approaches may involve professionals who know how you can contact resources for rehabilitation services.

Select Rehabilitation Facilities offer housing and/or rehab services for specific conditions, such as, following injury or surgery in which daily living skills may need to be learned again or new skills may need to be developed to compensate for a permanent disability (physical, occupational, speech, cognitive therapies).

Nursing Homes do not fall under the category of assisted living because they provide additional medical services, but some may seem to act like assisted living if they offer temporary nursing home care for the purpose of rehabilitation, such as, from a surgery or a stroke.  So, some nursing homes may provide for physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and cognitive therapy.
