Breast Reduction Surgery

During breast reduction surgery, your plastic surgeon will may make incisions that relate to the appropriate technique to use in your surgery, as follows:

  • Inverted T anchor breast reduction involves an incision that circles the areola, follows down the center of the breast and across the breast crease.
  • Vertical mammoplasty omits the incision along the breast crease to provide better shape and longer term results for those who qualify. The remaining scar looks like a lollipop.
  • Liposuction involves very tiny incisions in discreet locations, as possible to remove unwanted fat.

There are also times that a shorter incision may be used for the inverted T anchor technique or the vertical mammoplasty.

Next, your plastic surgeon will remove glandular fat, breast tissue, skin, and raise the nipple-areolar complex. In most breast reduction cases, the nipples remain attached to the blood vessels and nerves in order to preserve sensation. Liposuction is used to remove glandular breast fat. In some cases, liposuction alone may be used to reduce the size of the breasts and reshape them. During liposuction, a cannula is placed below the skin through a small incision. Then, the cannula is used to break up and suction fat cells. Within four hour’s time, the procedure is complete. Soon, you will be comfortably relaxing at home.

Aftercare

Following breast reduction surgery, you will receive a list of guidelines to help ensure that you have a smooth recovery and can enjoy pleasing results quickly. Your breasts may be wrapped in a surgical bra and gauze dressing or a breathable elastic bandage for a few days.  In the two days that follow the procedure, you may have a tiny drain placed in each breast to relieve fluid collection under the breasts. Yet, drains are not necessary to use as often today. Your skin may feel dry. So, you can apply moisturizer on your breasts around the incisions. You may experience breast swelling which may feel discomforting, but this resolves within a few days to weeks after surgery. If you experience sensation loss, it is usually because of the swelling you experience following surgery.  Your stitches will dissolve in a week. The breasts are not typically too tender. You will likely be able to return to work within 10 days. You will wear a bra around the clock for at least one month. Your breasts will settle into their new shape over the next six months. Scars will fade over the first year and will not be noticeable in clothing. Regardless of the extent of scarring, most all women that have undergone breast reduction determine that the benefits outweigh any downside associated with the procedure.

In the end, your breast reduction surgery can create enrichment in life. You’ll experience relief from the size and weight of your breasts. You’ll enjoy a more trim physique. You’ll welcome the enhancement of your breasts both clothed and unclothed. You’ll feel renewed with beautifully contoured breasts that are in proportion with your body.
