Attention Deficit Disorder

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that affects millions of children which may persist through adulthood. ADD children commonly have difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. There are three basic subtypes of ADHD, including:

Combined ADHD (the most common subtype) which posses symptoms of hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattentiveness

Inattentive ADHD (previously known as ADD) which is marked by impaired attention and concentration, and

Hyperactive Impulsive ADHD is characterized by marked hyperactivity and impulsiveness but may sustain a considerable attention span. The diagnosis of ADD or ADHD is commonly clinched when these symptoms occur before the age of 7 and most symptoms may be observable on more than one occasion at home, school or at work. The symptoms may also show considerable evidence that the affected individual is impaired to function normally at home, social environments or at work.

Treatment Options for ADD

The standard treatment for ADD includes education, counseling, medications, training for compensation skills, and relieving symptoms of ADD or ADHD. The following treatment options may be considered.

Stimulant Medications – Psychostimulants are the most commonly prescribed medications for ADHD. Stimulants boosts and balance neurotransmitters in the brain to improve signs and symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity. Psychostimulants are contraindicated in individuals with heart disease.

Behavior Therapy – Teachers and parents may perform behavior changing therapies like reward systems and timeouts.

Psychotherapy – Older individuals with ADD may communicate problems or negative issues that confound them through professional counseling. Psychotherapy with a professional may help develop strategies to overcome crisis.

Parenting Skills Training – Parents are encouraged to undergo ADHD skill training to effectively address their ADHD or ADD child properly. Family members may join to participate to help cope with the stress of having an ADHD at home.

Social Skill Training – Children may be taught to socially act appropriately through intensive trainings.

Outcomes

Early diagnosis and intervention are paramount for the successful outcome of ADD and ADHD children. Individuals which are not diagnosed early often fall into low educational score categories during adulthood may be more likely to experience less than optimal social and economic outcomes.
