Selecting Your Weight Loss Surgeon

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in conjunction with Surgical Review Corporation launched a Center of Excellence program to meet the needs of the obese. The goal of the Center of Excellence program is to designate and regulate bariatric surgeons and hospitals in order to provide optimal care for those in need.

Qualifications for Centers of Excellence

In order to be considered for designation as a Center of Excellence, hospitals and surgeons must meet rigid criteria, including, but not limited to:

• The surgeon must have performed at least 125 bariatric procedures in a lifetime and must maintain 50 procedures per year.

• A Center of Excellence hospital must perform a minimum of 125 bariatric procedures annually.

• Facilities that perform weight loss surgery must undergo a rigorous site inspection every 3 years by the Surgical Review Corporation.

• Center of Excellence surgeons and hospitals must submit patient outcomes data to provide real time reviews that measure performance of the surgeon, associated staff members and facility.

Your Enhanced Access to Care Alert

As Michael Hartney, Vice President for Legal Affairs of Surgical Review Corporation adds, “In the early 2000’s, we laid the groundwork for better understanding patient outcomes. Today, we understand there is no question about safety when it comes to Centers of Excellence, particularly since we’ve quantified a less than 0.1% mortality rate. Additionally, serious health issues common among the obese, such as sleep apnea, diabetes, and joint disorders, may be resolved following weight loss surgery.”
