UPJ Treatment Options

Ureteropelvic Junction (UPJ) Obstruction treatment options vary depending upon several factors, including but not necessary limited to: the diagnosis, the type of obstruction(s), the availability of advanced technology at the hospital you select, the Urologist’s preference, level of expertise of the Urologist in various treatment options and your insurance.

One or more treatment options may be discussed with you during consultation with your physician or surgeon.  Invasive procedures may be more likely to be performed on infants and young children when deemed necessary. Adults may be more likely to be treated with less invasive procedures.

Treatment for Children

The best way to treat children is to monitor the evolution of functionality very closely. For the children with ureteropelvic junction obstructions, the therapy may be focused on:

  • Maintaining sterile urine
  • Assessing renal function
  • Assessing the degree of hydronephrosis

Surgical Intervention may be indicated, if the following is detected.

  • Significantly impaired renal drainage
  • Poor renal growth
