Symptoms of Restenosis

 And Your Physician Consultation

Symptoms of Restenosis should be promptly evaluated to rule out other conditions and help ensure the condition is a not life threatening emergency. Restenosis may symptoms may be similar to the first occurrence of the vessel blockage, as follows.

  • Chest pain and discomfort
  • Diaphoresis or profuse sweating
  • Referred pain
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

Your Physician Consultation and Diagnosis

The important component in the history intake with your physician is the prior handling of the coronaries with stent or balloon dilatation. Thus, your Q and A with your physician may be valuable. The re-occurrence of the symptoms may warrant diagnostic tests which will confirm restenosis or may diagnose alternative conditions.

Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG) – ECG is an important diagnostic test if Restenosis is suspected. The procedure involves placing an electrode on the chest to determine the polarity and quality of the heart’s electrical discharges. Your physician may note and compare old readings with the new readings to rule out a possibility of another myocardial infarction in another area.

Cardiac Stress Test – This is also known as the treadmill test. During this test, the heart rate, blood pressure and ECG readings are continually monitored while the individual is performing select exercises. Stress tests may suggest restenosis or a new obstruction in the cardiac vessel.

Echocardiography – Utilizes sound waves to elucidate the image of the heart in real time. The results offer an image of the size and the shape of the heart. Cardiologists may also carefully observe the behavior of the blood flow through the coronaries and observe progressive obstructions due to accumulation of atherosclerotic plaques.

Cardiac Angiography– – This is an invasive procedure whereby a flexible plastic tube is inserted in a big vessel of the thigh, arm or neck, and threaded to the heart. Cardiac catheters may feed a dye to illustrate the re-occurrence of atherosclerotic blockade in the previously treated artery.

Blood Test – Cardiac blood test like troponin and CK-MB may just rule out any possibility of a new Myocardial Infarction elsewhere in the heart.

Other Possible Related Conditions?

All coronary Restenosis cases must evaluate the re-occurrence of a primary disease like Acute Coronary Syndrome, making sure that the symptoms at hand are not life-threatening. Differentials like gastric pain, anxiety and panic attack are other considerations to rule out or to consider for treatment.
