Infertility and Treatments

Ob/Gyns have made great strides to better understand infertility and to develop treatments for     Infertility. After a year that a couple makes efforts to have a child that are unsuccessful, the possibility of infertility may be considered.  This is a time for an initial consult with the OB-Gyn physician. It may be  the female, male or both partners that require an infertility work-up.

The initial consults will involve a Q and A session with your doctor and comprehensive evaluation to identify or rule out a number of physical, psychosocial and emotional conditions may cause infertility in both males and females, including, but not necessarily limited to:  

  • Birth defects
  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Complications from diseases, including sexually transmitted disease.
  • Sexual Dysfunctions
  • History of drug therapy that may affect fertility.
  • Cancer treatments, such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
  • Smoking, alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse.
  • Old Age

For females, various conditions are the most common specific cause of infertility-

  • Ovarian Cysts, including Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • Endometriosis
  • Obesity
  • Thyroid Disease
  • Autoimmune Disease
  • Growths and abnormalities in the female reproductive system
  • Cancer or tumor
  • Eating disorder or poor nutritional status
  • Hormonal Imbalances and Abnormalities in the Menstrual Cycle

For males, the following are e common male specific causes of infertility-

  • Impotence
  • Retrograde ejaculation
  • Prolonged exposure to environment with high temperature.
  • Growths or abnormalities in the male reproductive tract
  • Use of certain medicines, including: cimetidine and spironolactone.
