In the field of orthopedic surgery, the name of Dr. Douglas E. Garland, M.D. receives special mention. Being the Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Center at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and the Clinical Professor of Orthopedics at USC, he has acquired broad experience in various types of bone disease, along with spinal cord injury (SCI), heterotopic ossifications and many other orthopedic areas. He is also the Director of Neuromuscular Services—serving 150 individuals with spinal cord and head injuries (TBI). He was the former Chief of Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, Fracture and Spinal Cord Injury Services at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center. His clinical interests lie in total joint arthroplasties, hip and knee replacement, arthroscopies for the knee and shoulder, heterotopic ossifications and osteoporosis in Long Beach, CA.
Dr. Garland has proudly authored several scientific articles and book chapters. As an associate of Rancho for over 18 years, he delivered the most comprehensive article on bone density in people having acute SCI. It was his unconditional support that helped developing a pulsed electromagnetic stimulating unit to treat non-unions of long bones and it is at present used by him to stimulate bone formation inside knee in patients with chronic SCI.
