Facial Rejuvenation with Orthodontics

101503871Facial rejuvenation with orthodontics has recently become a popular term among women and men today. Even though the American Dental Association recommends that children receive an orthodontic evaluation by age seven, nearly 30% of all those in the US who have orthodontics are adults today. People today are not only checking into orthodontics for an improper bite (malocclusion); they are also looking for a beautifully aligned smile  and facial enhancements. It’s certainly highly advantageous to pursue orthodontics early on in life; but if you miss out, you can still reap great rewards with orthodontics as an adult. Today, some orthodontists are also known for reshaping the jaw to rejuvenate the appearance of your face, neck and lips, particularly when performed in conjunction with maxillofacial surgical procedures. The most common reasons for dental braces are to correct a malocclusion and reposition teeth and tooth roots for improved functionality and esthetic appeal. In some cases, an improper bite may be caused by aged teeth and/or old dental restorations that have worn down over time. These issues may be addressed by your cosmetic dentist.

Malocclusion may also be caused by a misaligned jaw or bone structure, a small mouth, improper number of teeth, thumb sucking and tongue trusting. A malocclusion may cause difficulty speaking, chewing, swallowing and oral health conditions, such as, TMJ (TMD) or teeth grinding (bruxism). When malocclusion is caused by these issues, an orthodontist is usually the call to action.

With the benefit of improved technology, better aesthetics, and reduced treatment time, orthodontics may be right for you.  Let’s take a glance at some of the bothersome aging signs that orthodontics, oral genioplasty or maxillofacial surgery may improve significantly.

Improve Hollowed Facial Areas and Aged Facial Structures: Soft tissue loss, deformity of the mouth, and aged facial structures affect the appearance of your face and smile. With orthodontics, tooth restoration for proper positioning, width, and height can better support your facial structures and creates a more youthful appearance.

Improve an Aged Elongated Face, Chin Abnormality and Skin Folds: An elongated face, a protruding or receding chin, and nasiolabial skin folds that are associated with aging may be improved with chin reshaping and jaw repositioning. Through orthodontics and oral genioplasty, your chin may be reshaped to make it appear bigger (if receding) or smaller (if protruding) for a more balanced youthful appearance. Chin reshaping may also alter the distance between the nose and the chin, improving skin folds in that area. Oral surgeons and orthodontists may combine treatment plans to improve the appearance of a long face with large gums by swinging the lower jaw up and hiding the gummy smile. This creates the appearance of a shorter face.

The transformation can be great for people who invest in orthodontics.  In some cases, treatment may offer a 10- to 15-year younger appearance with interdisciplinary dental care. Orthodontic makeovers may be an adjunct to plastic surgery treatment as well. In fact, some plastic surgeons and dental practitioners collaborate to provide more dramatic results.

Selecting Your Orthodontist

Your general dentist will conduct an initial examination of your oral cavity; including your teeth and bite. Old restorations and worn down teeth are usually addressed first by your general dentist to improve your malocclusion (bite). If there are other reasons for your malocclusion, your general dentist will often refer you to an orthodontist. Orthodontists are certified practitioners of orthodontics who have completed 2-3 years of post dental school training and may have completed continuing education courses to be able to perform advanced orthodontic treatments, such as, facial rejuvenation  makeovers.

You can also locate an orthodontist who specializes in makeovers yourself by typing “orthodontist cosmetic makeover” into your key word search box. You can include your city and state in the key word search box to trigger results in your local area.
