Arthritis Symptoms and Therapies
Arthritis comes in many forms. The right approach to treatment is highly individualized. There is a wide range of treatments available to manage the condition. Conventional arthritis treatments may include: medications, physical therapy, occupational therapy, the application of heat or cold packs and surgery (such as orthopedic surgery). The holistic approach may involve a variety of remedies for each symptom, including:
Limited Mobility: Tai Chi allows for slow calculated movements of the joints in the body. Tai Chi also allows for proper stretch of the muscles. In these ways, Tai Chi may help with limited mobility. Some holistic practitioners also suggest MSM, Glucosamine/Chondroitin Sulfate combo and Vitamin E to increase joint flexibility.
Pain and Stiffness: Acupuncture/Acupressure has been known to improve discomfort and stiffness associated with Osteoarthritis. Acupuncture focuses on stimulating specific energy points in the body such as the arms legs, shoulders and feet to provide relief to muscles and joints. During the acupuncture procedure, microthin needles are inserted under the skin to reach the trigger point. Acupressure uses the same energy points but is stimulated manually without the needles. Often, one treatment session provides benefits. More treatment sessions may be required, depending upon the severity of the condition.
Joint Pain: Supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin have been known to reduce pain and improve joint functionality. Certain herbs may be useful in the treatment of arthritis.
Swelling: Proteolytic enzymes have been taken by the German and Russian Olympic athletes for decades to reduce inflammation, swelling and stimulate healing. Herbal remedies that aid in tissue inflammation include ingredients such as Curcumin (Tumeric), Boswellia Serrata and Ginger extract. Omega 3 Oils and Vitamin C are also anti-inflammatory and contributes to healing.
Weak Bones: A combination of Calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin K2, Magnesium, Silica and Vitamin C is crucial for bone health.
